Your Sandals May be Harming Your Feet

Did you know wearing sandals and flip-flops can actually be detrimental to your foot health? Podiatrists often advise against them because they can lead to a multitude of foot issues if worn for extended periods. These issues may include arch or heel pain, shin splints, and Achilles tendonitis. They can also create an imbalance that leads to issues further up the body.

How Do They Cause This?

Wearing sandals and flip-flops causes your toes to grip the shoe, which can lead to arch collapse. This forces the plantar fascia — the ligament connecting your heel bone to your toes — to stretch away from the heel bone. The repeated stress of this, along with gravity, can cause tiny tears in the ligament to form, which can lead to pain.

What Should I Wear Instead?

Running shoes are always a solid choice, but shoes like Birkenstocks and Chacos are good options too. Both are approved by the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA) and give your feet that open-air feeling while being supportive enough not to cause harm over long periods. They provide good arch support and do not cause your toes to grip the shoe. Chacos also have a strap around the heel to help keep it in place.

The Bottom Line

Wearing flip-flops and slides for short periods is fine, but wearing them all day or for extended periods can cause harm that leads to pain. Supportive, well-fitting shoes let you enjoy your long walks while keeping your feet happy and healthy. There are plenty of shoes on the market that do this besides normal tennis shoes, so don't feel like there is only one option when it comes to footwear.
